Overview
One of the guiding principles behind the design of the Sterna Business Positioning System (“BPS”) was that of rapid implementation and the delivery of business value within the second week of implementation. A true revolution.

The Sterna BPS platform is architected to enable rapid implementation and maximum flexibility for ongoing maintenance. Furthermore, Sterna Technologies provides an implementation methodology and best practices that complement the technology platform, ensuring that our professional services organization and network of implementation partners are equipped to successfully deliver upon our promise, time and time again

The Sterna BPS platform is architected to enable rapid implementation and maximum flexibility for ongoing maintenance. Furthermore, Sterna Technologies provides an implementation methodology and best practices that complement the technology platform, ensuring that our professional services organization and network of implementation partners are equipped to successfully deliver upon our promise, time and time again.

Industry-specific best practices are captured in Sterna Packaged Libraries, a broad set of predefined business schemas, mathematical models, and graphical Business Views. The Sterna Packaged Libraries are leveraged during the implementation life cycle for the rapid assembly of Sterna BPS solutions.

SOS - Sterna on Sterna
At Sterna Technologies we believe in full transparency towards our customers. We utilize Sterna BPS to monitor the progress of all of our ongoing Sterna BPS projects; we call this Sterna on Sterna, or “SOS”. We provide our customers with access to SOS, such that each customer has full visibility to their respective project progress details.

Sterna “Feed-Forward” Implementation Methodology
The Sterna BPS “Feed-forward” implementation methodology lends its name from the field of System Dynamics, which is also the basis for the entire Sterna BPS solution and approach. Feed-forward is described in terms of reaction to change, quick response, future-based and dynamic.

The Sterna Feed-Forward implementation methodology is iterative in nature, each iteration having four steps, as described below. An iteration of the project is typically completed within 1-6 weeks, is packaged as a deliverable, and deployed to the business users for production use.

Define
During this phase, which typically lasts for 2-5 days, a Sterna strategic business consultant performs a high-level assessment of those operational activities (having financial impact) that will be captured in the current iteration. Working with the customer’s senior management, the relevant organization’s Business Communities are mapped, and main dependencies between them defined. Sterna consultants work with the customer’s management team in workshop-driven meetings to review the contents of relevant Sterna Packaged Libraries and to assess their fit for implementation within the customer’s business environment.

Key deliverables of this step include:

High-level Business Dependency Network, describing the main business entities and the mathematical dependencies between them

Sterna Business View Definition – which Business Views are to be implemented in the current iteration, including presentation format (UI guidelines, operational target per Business View, and more), and definition of customizations necessary for Packaged Libraries as may be relevant

Navigation Definition – possible navigation paths through the Business Views (dimensions, drill-down paths, filter options, and more)

Security Definition – how the data is to be segregated between users of different roles

Assemble
During this phase, the solution is assembled from the Packaged Libraries, and custom functionality is built as necessary. Mapping between the resulting Sterna BPS data model and the customer’s data sources is performed, including the transformation of the data into the Sterna BPS in-memory data structures. If direct access to the necessary data sources is prohibitive in a short timeframe, intermediate (temporary) data sources may be used.

Key deliverables of the Assemble phase include:

Test plans
Data mapping and transformation specifications
System ready for test

Test & Deploy
End-to-end testing is performed on the system against the test scripts, ensuring compliance of functionality and data integrity.

Because the system is extremely intuitive to use, end-user training typically requires less than one hour, if at all necessary.

The Sterna BPS solution is then deployed to production in one of 2 methods; it is either deployed on premise at the customer’s facilities, or hosted by Sterna Technologies as a service. It is possible to begin with a hosted deployment, and migrate to an on-premise deployment once the solution is fully deployed.

Monitor
Once deployed to production, the system is closely monitored for system usage and adoption using the Sterna BPS monitoring tools. Necessary modifications to the solution are implemented and redeployed to production, typically in hours.
